In a Wheelchair and Planning to Move? Tips to Find the Right Home and Move Your Things
If you are disabled and in a wheelchair, you need to make sure you find a house that will work well for you. Once you find a home, getting your things packed and moved will be more difficult. This is especially true if you do not have a lot of help. Below are some tips to find the right home for you and getting your things there without any problems.
Finding the Home
Contact a real estate agent to help you find the right home for you. Because you need it to be set up a certain way, it will likely take some time to find the right home. Some things you need to look for in a home include:
- The doorways need to be wide enough for your wheelchair to fit through. If not, you should determine how difficult it would be to remove the doorways and replace them to make them wider.
- There should be enough space inside the home for you to easily maneuver your wheelchair. For example, an open floor plan would be perfect for you.
- Make sure there is enough room to install a ramp outside.
- The bathroom should be large enough for you to maneuver in.
- You should be able to install a roll in shower in the bathroom.
- The garage should be large enough for your van.
These are just a few of the things you would need to have in the home or be able to change.
If you cannot find a home that has these things or it would be difficult for you to make these changes, building a new home would be your best option.
Moving Your Things
When you have found the right home for you, contact a moving company in your area. Let them know you are in a wheelchair and they can send a few employees to your home to pack up everything for you. They will then load the things on to their moving track and transport them. Watch over them as they pack to ensure your fragile items are packed correctly, as well as any items that are precious to you, such as old books or family heirlooms. There should be no problems because moving employees are trained in how to pack things the right way.
The moving company can unpack your items when you get to your new home. They could even set up everything for you. All of this will be an additional charge for you, however. Ask the moving company if they offer a discount to someone that is disabled. This can cut down costs considerably.
