Improving Your Next Move

Three Ways To Make Your First Week At A New Home Easier

The first week after moving in is always busy and stressful. You're busy unpacking, getting used to a new job, and learning your way around a new neighborhood. While there's really no way to make this a relaxing, most-wonderful week of your life, there are a few things you can do to reduce your stress and make this first week more tolerable.

Take advantage of unpacking services.

Many moving companies, such as Road Runners Delivery Service, offer unpacking services, but you may be tempted to turn them down in an effort to save money. But when you've already paid for moving services, adding on unpacking does not cost that much more. Having someone else unpack everything, even if your organize and put it away on your own, will save you so much time during your first week. This is time you can spend getting a good night's sleep or better acquainting yourself with the community.

Talk to the neighbors.

Don't wait to start making friendships. When you first move in is when the neighbors are going to be most aware of you and have you in the forefront of their minds. So when you're carrying boxes in and out and see people passing by, strike up a casual conversation with them. You never know who you will bond with, and it will be helpful to have someone around to call upon if you need help moving something heavy in the coming days.

Set aside time for relaxation.

When you have so many important things to do, it's all too easy to go, go, go from the time you wake up 'till the time you go to bed. You'll burn yourself out this way. To ensure you don't overdo it, designate an hour a day during which you only relax. This could be an hour of quiet when you first wake up, an hour after work when you watch TV to unwind before continuing to unpack, or an hour before bedtime when you read or do yoga. Set an alarm in your phone to ring when this hour begins and again when it ends.

If you make it through the first week, life in your new home will start to calm down and feel more normal. Just keep these tips in mind and remember to take a few deep breaths when you start to feel like there's too much on your plate.
